What is it and why is called sealing gasket?

It is called sealing gasket  a piece of compliant material used to seal two sides and are used generically element in any hydraulic  or pneumatic handling or any other fluid, solid or gas. A sealing gasket may also be known as packing or mechanical gasket.

The material of a sealing gasket can be varied depending on its use. We can find gaskets of rubber, silicone, metal, etc.

The sealing gaskets solve sealing problems that may occur in different applications: motors, equipment, transfer of fluids such as water, air, gas, lubricants and oils, fuels, steam, chemicals.

They are also used to seal the devices used in fluid transport pumps, valves and flanges.

The sealing gaskets prevent possible environment leaks preserving and providing security to industrial processes.

How many types of sealing gasket are used in the market?

Depending on the conditions and required sealing, each process requires a gasket sealing material concrete with different properties either by the type of fluid contact (Alkaline, oxidizing, viscous, acid etc.), temperature, pressure or vacuum and linear velocity of the point to be sealed if it is to make a dynamic seal.

The most usual sealing gaskets are O-rings, Gaskets, oil seals, seals for pneumatic and Hydraulic, braided packing, double metal jacketed gaskets, spiral wound gaskets, metal gaskets (RTJ, grooved gaskets) and flange insulating kits.

It is also habitual the sealing gasket manufacturing in different technical plastics:

PTFE,PEEK,POM,PCPTFE.

Is exist different types of sealing?

Generically there are two types of sealing: dynamic and static.

It is called static sealing one in which the sealing element is not subjected to any friction or movement with respect to another part of equipment or machine. However, often also it called static sealing  which perform on a shaft, a rod or any part of a rotating team  or reciprocating movement whose speed does not exceed 2 mt / sec.

The dynamic sealing is being performed on a shaft, rod or moving part either reciprocating or rotary it but with a speed equal to or upper than 2 m / sec.

We understand that executes a reciprocating body along its own axis, also called axial movement. One example is performing a piston movement either pneumatic or hydraulic along the cylinder. We define rotational movement as one that makes a body around its own axis.

The static sealing: occurs between surfaces without relative movement between them and dynamic sealing: occurs between surfaces having a relative movement of one with respect the other one.
